While you don't have to have all four to 'constitute' something as traumatic for you - after all, it's highly individualized, isn't it? - most find most of these features in each event that 'still bothers them.' I am suggesting that this statement alone might be a clue to how deeply the person feels 'stuck' in what the brilliant Dr. Robert Scaer calls, 'the trauma capsule.'

Take a look at the following and see if you don't have some 'ah-ha's' about either something in your own life, or in your client's. And of course, cleaning up our own stuff is key to being fully present to help someone else clean up theirs!

Four Features of Encoding a Memory or Event as 'Traumatic'

1. It’s Unexpected. (Usually combined with ‘sudden’)
Examples:
All of the sudden, there he was the guy who did that to me; I never expected to see him again!
We were just sitting there, when all of the sudden, this tree crashed through our roof.
Nothing was wrong, it was an ordinary day, then all of the sudden he attacked me.
I had always made good grades easily, but that day, out of the blue, I just couldn’t remember a thing for the test.
I’ve always known she was flirty, she was born that way!, but it never occurred to me I should worry about leaving her alone with my boyfriend.

2. It’s Isolating. (Could be physical or metaphorical)
Examples:
I realized I was out in the middle of nowhere, and had no idea how to find help.
I was alone in the car in the dark and there was no one to help me.
There I was, in the middle of the biggest party, yet I’d never felt so small or alone or worthless….
I never told anyone this; I had no one to tell that I could trust.
It didn’t occur to me anyone else had had this kind of situation; I just thought it was happening to me.
He told me this had to be our secret, that no one else would understand, so I kept it all to myself.

3. It’s about Survival. It could be physical, or even a threat to our Identity.

Examples:

I thought I was going to die.
I couldn’t let anyone know what had happened, or they’d fire me.
I couldn’t breathe, I was choking, I thought this was it.
He said he’d kill me and my family, too, if I ever breathed a word of this.
I’d begun to lose hope that anyone would find me in time.

4. And Powerlessness. (No idea of what to do, And/Or ability to do it.)
Examples:

I was trapped! I couldn’t see in the dark, didn’t know what to do. I was too scared to even scream.
I couldn’t figure it out; there was no way out. I was gonna lose it all.
I realized he was the boss and the jury; it was accept it or leave.
Here I am again, relegated to the bottom of the barrel. I guess this is how it is. No way out.
The court said she got to take it all. There was nothing I could do about it.
I had no money to fight it. This was a money game, and that’s that. Deal with it.
I had nothing left. It was over, and there was nothing I could do about it.

It’s a great idea to know these 4 features very well, so you can be listening (Active Listening) for them in your own self-talk, as well as your client sessions. Listening for these features can help you quickly see that the event has been encoded as a trauma, and you can pay special attention to the release that needs to happen to ‘complete’ the threat cycle. Dr. Scaer's (and others, like Peter Levine) talk about the body's physical threat cycle - this means it's NOT all in the head, in fact perhaps very little is in the head!

Go to the body and put your attention on the whole body, not just its obvious physicality but also its mid-brain, limbic system. This is where the beauty of Tapping comes into play, releasing one activated Aspect at a time, methodically, safely, comfortably.

If you'd like to learn more about this, attend one of my trainings (EFT Training for Mastery), or read more of the work by Dr. Robert Scare, Peter A. Levine,PhD, or Dr. Bessell Van der Kolk.

Convincing 'Givers' to receive has been surprisingly hard! But little by little, opening up to the idea that Givers also need to receive in order to be truly powerful Givers...is being heard. Being allowed. Being experienced, some of them for the first time in their lives. It's powerful mojo, this RECEIVING. And when we heal our wounds by allowing ourselves to receive healing in our deepest, darkest places...we are reborn and remade in our capacity - to Give - to Heal - to Serve, more powerfully.

If there is a benefit from the attention that veterans with PTSD receive its that more attention is being directed to the condition itself.

Physicians, psychologists, counsellors and therapists of every stripe are increasingly in agreement that trauma and unresolved stress are greater health threats and more costly health issues than was ever acknowledged. In addition, studies and the search for more effective solutions continue to point out the dismal record that drugs and tradition therapy have in dealing with PTSD.

We may still be some way off from seeing energy psychology used as the treatment of choice for combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD, but the issue of PTSD in the general population is benefiting in the greater attention being paid to post trauma in communities including abused women and children.

In this post in Scientific American - PTSD: The Futile Search for the "Quick Fix" many perspectives on the causes for, as well as a limited and traditionally biased view of treatment options, is important more for the facts it raises about PTSD in our society.

Its another sign of the greater recognition and concerns that researchers, administrators and interest groups are bringing to post traumatic stress in every aspect of public, as well as military life.

Emotions over the treatment of service men and women capture headlines (and yes, documentary filmmakers) where similar attention and emotion are not top of mind for victimized women or others in our communities. The fact remains that until we recognize the prevalence of this condition and the absence of anything like success in treating it using "approved" methods whether for everyday people, or the alarming number of combat veterans and military families, we will all continue to suffer and pay.

I encourage you to read this article and the responses it garnered if PTSD is a topic you are working with or interested in in any capacity. It brings focus on where the debate rests today and insights into how future debates might better be framed.

As quoted in the article -

"Though the military tried to deny the ubiquity of PTSD for many years, prevalence studies made it impossible. Mental illness is the leading cause of hospitalization for active duty troops....The majority of mental health cases in the military have a PTSD component. Prevalence of the disorder is affirmed in the public sphere, where an endless stream of sympathetic portrayals of veterans with "invisible wounds" can be found in literature, on film and television.

The U.S. military spends more money on PTSD research and treatment than any other funder, and with good reason: 8%-20% of veterans suffer from PTSD. Estimates vary widely, as in most claims surrounding PTSD, but that's a range of between 1.75-4.5 million vets with the disorder, and our continual wars ensure a steady stream of new cases.

The lure of a quick and enduring fix for PTSD is hard for the military to resist since they stand to benefit greatly from a cure. They would surely like to save the $1.5 million per soldier they believe PTSD will ultimately cost them."

Without directly intending to do so, this article is a great primer for anyone building a case against pharmaceuticals, or standard methods of care. Energy psychology has repeatedly proven successful in tests measuring for changes in PTSD stress levels in combat veterans, even if the writer conveniently did not include those facts and the studies to support them.

Perhaps the greatest good that media attention to PTSD in the military does is to make us aware of the money and power that comes from treating something we all can face at any time and how little is being done to effectively offer us lower cost, more successful treatment options.

If we need more reason to honor and thank veterans for their service it may reside in this piece from the same article -

"The convergence of pharmaceutical and military interests, and the funding nexus they create, has ensured that the focus of PTSD research and treatment continues to be military veterans, despite the fact that military veterans comprise only 15% (at minimum) or 40% (at maximum) of the approximately 11 million adults andadolescents who suffer from PTSD in the U.S."

Regardless of how we eventually come to our senses, more and more returning combat veterans are demonstrating that unless we address it, PTSD manifests and remains a significant health challenge wherever trauma is found.

I was glad to see Rue Hass' commentary on the traumas the US suffered in December; these kinds of things always rock me to my core. I know I'm not alone in that, and that this marvelous set of energy techniques we all practice has HUGE benefits -- for the local people directly involved, as well as the locals who serve them. But not only them! Just as important are those of us who suffer along with them empathetically as we hear the relentless details of the news cycle. (It's hard to convince the media that this re-traumatizes those watching.)

No doubt one of the hardest things is to feel we can only sit on our hands and watch it all, helplessly. So, with that in mind, I wanted to tell you that there is some hope brewing along those lines, and in our own country! There is a response model in progress, and you can find out more from me, Jondi@TapFest.com, or from the nascent site: Newtown Project We are proceeding slowly, carefully, safely and conscientiously. Because...these folks need help. Because... unfortunately this will happen again, somewhere. And because... we CAN bring healing to the world.

We go with other heart-centered models in our sights, a beacon of light and good in the world - Margot Diskin in Tanzania and Kenya, Deepak Mostert in Indonesia, Lori Leyden in Rwanda, Deborah Miller in Mexico, Till Shilling in Ecuador. Suzanne Zacharia in South Africa, Rod Sherwin in Australia....and so many more that have joined relief efforts in Haiti, Japan, New Zealand.... (many of these amazing tapping experts are on our radio show archives, under TapFest, at BlogTalkRadio and EFTradioOnline.com, for free.)

More on this project as we go; in the meantime, I invite you to support us with your thoughts, prayers, energy, and even a buck or two to speed the way for the volunteers who are giving themselves so whole-heartedly to this endeavor.

Beyond tapping, I want to share my experience with you.
Maybe in reading it, you can find your own way to hold
a steady space in your heart that lets these violent winds
blow without knocking you over.

The whole world needs for us to stand in our
strength and capacity to be a source of blessing
right now. You can help.

Last night I went to a joyous holiday program
presented by Ars Nova, an a cappella choir
singing spiritual celebrations, hymns and carols
from across the ages composed by Hildegarde de
Bingen up to modern composers. It was wonderful
and powerful, and for me it turned into an
opportunity to practice a deep subtle activism in
an unusual way.

The director took a silent moment at the beginning
of the program to honor the events and victims of
the Newtown, Connecticut shooting.

In about the third piece, I found myself closing
my eyes, and filling with the beautiful music
beyond the words. And then I found myself at the
scene of the shooting, and the music was creating
a holding space of coherency for the shattered
souls of the children. This experience lasted for
several songs.

I wasn’t doing anything specific, just somehow
helping to provide a container for
all the allies and angels of those killed to do
their infinite, personal, generative work, along
with all the beings drawn to help with this
tragedy in other ways. This offering of help and
healing happened during several pieces, with
different energetic vibrations provided by the
different pieces.

Then I seemed to fall into a pattern of just being
open to each song or hymn or carol, and holding
its presence in me. And then I would be directed
or guided to the next context that needed this
particular holding space. I wasn’t trying to make
anything happen, just offering the space to allow
an opening, beautiful, healing, reconnecting
presence to be available for the particular
entity, space or being to draw upon in whatever
way it needed to.

Beyond tapping, I want to share my experience with you.
Maybe in reading it, you can find your own way to hold
a steady space in your heart that lets these violent winds
blow without knocking you over.

The whole world needs for us to stand in our
strength and capacity to be a source of blessing
right now. You can help.

Last night I went to a joyous holiday program
presented by Ars Nova, an a cappella choir
singing spiritual celebrations, hymns and carols
from across the ages composed by Hildegarde de
Bingen up to modern composers. It was wonderful
and powerful, and for me it turned into an
opportunity to practice a deep subtle activism in
an unusual way.

The director took a silent moment at the beginning
of the program to honor the events and victims of
the Newtown, Connecticut shooting.

In about the third piece, I found myself closing
my eyes, and filling with the beautiful music
beyond the words. And then I found myself at the
scene of the shooting, and the music was creating
a holding space of coherency for the shattered
souls of the children. This experience lasted for
several songs.

I wasn’t doing anything specific, just somehow
helping to provide a container for
all the allies and angels of those killed to do
their infinite, personal, generative work, along
with all the beings drawn to help with this
tragedy in other ways. This offering of help and
healing happened during several pieces, with
different energetic vibrations provided by the
different pieces.

Then I seemed to fall into a pattern of just being
open to each song or hymn or carol, and holding
its presence in me. And then I would be directed
or guided to the next context that needed this
particular holding space. I wasn’t trying to make
anything happen, just offering the space to allow
an opening, beautiful, healing, reconnecting
presence to be available for the particular
entity, space or being to draw upon in whatever
way it needed to. In each case, in its own way,
there was help for the recipient to reconnect with
life, land, and soul.

I don’t remember all the recipients of this gift
of musical presence, but here are some.
